The Internet Archive was sued by a group representing several major publishing houses over infringements in copyright law. The ramifications of which threaten to close the archives doors forever. Aaron Swartz knew that the arbiters of history could end up being a handful of people who simply bought the rights. On the night of January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested near the Harvard campus and eventually charged with wire fraud, computer fraud, and a host of other federal charges.
