The Importance of Self-Esteem
Poverty deforms the personality so that you begin to internalize the denigrating view of yourself that others have and treat yourself that way from within. Varlam Shalomot's early novella called poor people was not a study of poverty as a sociologist or an economist who'd done it. He has one wonderful story where this actually happened to him he was near death and started out at 200 pounds but ended up being 90 pounds. His health became better and he acquired weight began to think more and noticed which emotions came back first.
