How Schlemann Identified Troy of the Trojan War
In 1876 Schlemann began digging on the Greek mainland at Mycenae. He believed that Homer's Troy would be the oldest layer, so dug through each other layer until he reached what he would claim to be Troy of the Trojan War. Calvert and Schlemann would end up falling out over the methods used by Heinrich in a time where archaeology was not yet a professional field.
