In the United States, consumerism started to emerge towards the end of the 19th century. You get this 40 years from like 1880 to 1920-ish that are really, really consequential in determining how much of commerce is done today. And it's not just looking for the brands that you identify with, but as we've had this like neoliberalization of society, we're all expected to like create our own brands as well.
