We know from lots of work that it is much easier for us to give advice to other people than we are to take our own advice. So when you use your own name, that turns on the brain machinery for thinking about others - making it much easier to be our own coach rather than our own critic. And in all of our studies, we've asked people to do it silently. If you find that it's useful to do it out loud, go for it with a couple of caveats.
