Heart surgery became a specialty towards the end of the 1960s and early 70s. By the 80s, 90s it was actually quite well established. Nowadays, fortunately, I gave up heart transplantation and it's much more a young man's game. The results, the improvement in the results and the drop in mortality has been huge over recent years.
