When the tribes left israel, they were supposed to bring the truth about god to the rest of the world. In mormon culture, native americans are believed to be the primary descendants of the lamanites. One reading of the book is that it reinforces a kind of racis assumption of white supremacy. The ways in which it accounts for what has traditionally been seen as the origin of native americans has been productive of a great deal of racially insensitive interpretation.
