How to Make a Barometer
The first person to construct a barometer certainly that we're aware of was Evangelist Toricelli in the 1640s who was a student of Galileo. He hypothesized that well if this is correct and air did in fact have mass to it then if you go to the top of a mountain there is less air above you than there is at sea level so he wrote to his brother-in-law who lived near a mountain called Puede Dom in France because Pascal lived nowhere near any mountains.Toricelli communicated to Pascal how to build one of these things and they were both able to confirm each other's hypothesis by measuring their pressure levels on different parts of the system.
