The Importance of Moral Authority

Hume and Kant are the two key enlightenment figures I think to talk about here. Hume was famously, slightly dangerous, a bit of a skeptic about religion. But he doesn't place the emphasis on human reason in the typical manner of the enlightenment. And for Kant, of course reason as John has already made clear was absolutely the heart of morality. The trouble about belief in God is that it looks like if you just don't believe or you don't care that you're going to burn in health or all eternity then the thou shalt not won't really apply to you.
