The Perverse Incentives of Workism

Our intuition that effort is good for its own sake, regardless of what it produces, has created a work environment with perverse incentives. The anthropologist David Graber wondered how capitalism could sustain so many of what he bluntly called bullshit jobs. A capitalistic system should root out those inefficiencies, but it doesn't because alongside capitalism, we also operate under another system known as workism.
