Miss Alza Piedy was scarcely 20 in the Sunday school but a plain girl can grow old gracefully. The peep show of memory is what I mean by fragments. For me there is the stolid dog, the dampness of the beach, the sea gulls coming nearer. There are the searchlights of 20th century fox and the soft roar of the lion. In a room a man removes an artificial leg and pauses to massage the stump. As a street a neon sign flashes red then green through a half forgotten night.
