I was a bit confused about that. Ellis isn't gay, or is it that he couldn't permit himself to be gay? I think the relationship with Annie is more than that. There's definitely a study of internalised homophobia going on there in that relationship. The betrayal of the marriage that they have is clearly a loving relationship. It seems so inherently uneven and awkward. And indeed, it's very quite difficult for it to work in this novel. A large part of it is set in the 80s, and AIDS does play a role. But younger people, maybe, unless they saw it as sin on TV recently, it wouldn't be a way of just how much it's changed
