Is There a Realism in the Novel?

Catherine Mansfield's life is dramatic and a great story for biography and films. She wasn't interested in creating stories, she wanted to dispense with the whole heavy machinery of fiction as a plot-carrying device. The modernists took that up and thought, okay, but in this 19th century literature, we often don't get that tunneling inwards of the experience of the seamstress living in time. And more abstract questions started to emerge about how do we live in multiple timeframes at once?
