The us. Emerged on to the global stage at a time of cikethe collapse of the imperial system and the rise of assertive anti colonial resistance movements across the global south. And americans have to think through, what is it that justifies an power, and why is the us. Not just like all these other european empires? It's not unusual for a fairly conventional centraist liberal democrat to voice similar views about the constitution. But there's also this continual tendency to say that the thing that's going to protect us from trump is our constitutional principles. That's in the heart of contemporary American liberalism.
