In terms of primates, respect flows one way: from the subordinate to the person that's in charge. What is the difference between humans and chimps that makes us require mutual respect? I think it again has to do with the richer and more egalitarian forms of cooperation that humans have relied on for hundreds of thousands of years. So we had to give up dominance relationships in order to cooperate in a more complex and reliable way.
