The Downside of Unexplained Wealth Orders
Unexplained wealth orders were brought in five, six years ago to overturn the burden of proof on property. The first really big test case was a case brought by the National Crime Agency to some property owned by the daughter of the former president of Kazakhstan. But since that case happened, she was vindicated, the UWA was thrown out and it killed off the NCA's appetite for bringing these cases. This is something we've seen repeatedly really with these new innovations come in - there's hype and enthusiasm and then they don't amount to anything.
