In 1957, Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles comes up with a notion called peaceful evolution. His view is if you help satellite states of the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary,. then very gradually they will peacefully evolve towards a democratic system. And this is of course exactly what happened in Poland, even as the tanks, about 200 of them, enter Beijing on the 4th of June 1989 to cross the population. On that very same day in Poland, people vote the Communist Party out of power. So Poland quickly followed by Hungary in 1989 peacefully evolved towards democracy, having been helped economically by the United States and other countries.
