Olivia ward bush's second book, driftwood, was published in 19 14. This one was dedicated to her aunt, maria. Some sources list this book as having 25 poems and two prose pieces. The poem carney, the brave standard bearer, is about sergeant william h carney of the 50 fourth massachusetts regiment. That was at the battle of fort wagner, after being shot several times. And seriously wounded, carney carried the american flag to the fort, planted it and held it upright until help arrived. It's actually possible that bush had met carney. He lived in boston and new bedford,Massachusetts after the civil war.
