South Carolina Is the Pepper Center of the Southern View on Slavery
South Carolina is the pepper center of the southern view on slavery, especially during the convention. Governor Morris gave one of the most impassioned anti-slavery speeches at the Constitutional Convention. John Lawrence says we will raise a all black regiment of South Carolina soldiers in order to defend Charleston against an alluming attack from General Clinton and the British Army. If we must choose between independence and slavery, we pick slavery. And for that reason, I think you can say with some degree of confidence that a few years later at the convention when they threaten secession, they're not bluffing at all.
