The Difference Between Using and Controlling Fire

A big problem when you're trying to identify fire in archaeological record is trying to rule out whether it was made by humans or if it was naturally made. There aren't very many ways for a fire to get inside a cave which is helpful for us because we're working in a cave. The debate right now is what is the difference between using and controlling fire? At this point in Vondervort Cave we can just say that the hominins were living in close proximity with it. It says a lot about the hominin cognition when you look at whether they had the intelligence to create these fires just using stuff that they found off of the landscape rather than harvesting it.
