The document that Mike referenced earlier, the onboarding the Bitcoin core, I think spends a lot of time talking about architecture and the considerations that were involved. So if you're new to the project, you probably don't need to know all that because you're just going to make a small change. If you're making any more complicated change, you'll have to understand at least how the code works.
