We Do Need Growth, but We Need It
Many of the elements that drive up GDP can also do deep and lasting damage to the planet. That's what led some economists to the idea of de-growth. If we've caused environmental harms by our pursuit of growth, then perhaps the reverse gear is the only way we can mitigate those harms. The wildcard in this debate, and it's a hugely important one, is of course climate change. What we call growth is people having jobs that create value in the economy for other people,. We need it.
