The Holy Office didn't say either that Ticious's use of automatic writing was always permissible, or that it was always impermissible. It has a more qualified answer that suggests there could be circumstances in which automatic writing would be acceptable. Do we have other early indications of a more nuanced position on communication with the departed? We do. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a lot of scientific research being done on mediums and seances. The Church was warning laypeople against attending seances, but it seemed to have a problem with scientists doing research on them.
