The Uptick in Crime in North Carolina Since COVID
Last year we saw a 24% increase in juvenile crime across the state of North Carolina. 21% increase in violent crimes committed by juveniles. We see a lot of young people that have been underserved and did not receive the appropriate services during COVID. So for about two years there where kids were getting referred to the mental health system or to the social services system now they're coming into the juvenile justice system. And so one of the things that we really wanted to look at was how could we have school resource officers work with our court counselors to try to prevent those kids from entering the system but also still get them services that they needed.
