If the cards have ranks, the monsters can gain experience by doing different things like attacking your opponent. If you rank up cards, then they get like special abilities sometimes. Which those abilities only take place if they're made a deck leader. And in order to be able to challenge people like your overall rating on your deck has to be lower than them. So essentially you have to purposely build a deck that's weaker than theirs in a sense to just be able to challenging them.
