Russia has been confronted by combined forces of the West before, but this is first time it's had no allies. Russia must protect national security interests in Ukraine and widely in Europe's east or its future will be "bleak," says Ian Boulden. The United States has shown that power to mobilize the West against Russia, he adds. But countries such as Germany have moved against Russia even against their own best economic interests,. It's a very big challenge for Russia; I think this supports the thesis that this war is of existential importance for Russia.
