What I've Learned From World War II
I grew up believing with extraordinary naivety that wars were great adventures. I find in my books these days I write far more about victims than soldiers. One's seen enough terrible things on the battlefield but it is very difficult to fight wars. It used to seem so easy to just send the 101st airborne or the US Marine Corps to sort out your problem. Well now we know it's not that simple. And if you can't sort out the cultural issues in these countries that the101st airborne and the US Marines can't solve them for you any more than our own army camp.
