In Gaima Obasco, the country existed in a semi-farcical state. By the end of his reign, over a third of the entire country's population would either be dead or an exile overseas. He was deposed from power through a military coup led by his nephew, Theodore Obiang. It was generally received by the international community well because of the rule had brought such immense suffering and instability.
