The Long Pause Before Gilead
It was another 25 years before Gilead appeared. Marilynne Robinson: I wanted to write another narrative in which the enchantment that people feel with the land was, you know, an aesthetic impetus. In my family, stories about old times tended to circle around women. And so I was sort of rewriting,you know, the West. But at the same time I was kind of rewriting New England because I was so deeply struck by the literary methods and so on of the great New Englanders.
