The Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause
Michael Wolraich: The most important feature of the classic establishments was that they were controlled by the state. He says in South Carolina, for every established church to be a part of the Protestant establishment, it had to accept five articles of faith. "Disestablishment means, above all, that religious institutions are autonomous from the state," he says.
