Joseph Smith received revelations prior to the April 6 1830 founding of Mormonism. So it's not like the DNC, the revelations that make up the doctrine and covenants come after the church's founding. And so they're going to use an 1838 source, which should be a red flag except for the fact that most members don't really understand when you see it from Joseph Smith's history that his story has changed.
