The storyteller dies at the end because obviously it doesn't make sense. But that's the twist, isn't it? You don't expect it to end like that. Maybe Sue is telling this story in the afterlife, or maybe she's a ghost now and I don't know. Sometimes with literature, you can break all the rules - but still, it's quite funny when the when the narrator actually dies at theend of the story that they're telling.
