The Proximity Versus Ultimate Level of Explanation
Culture is every bit as biological as our genes. It's effectively a second mode of transmission where adaptive information accumulates. Once you recognize that, one can understand human adaptiveness much more clearly. Ultimate level questions must refer to the proximate mechanism. And proximate level questions should refer to the adaptive and deep history of why. But too often in modern science it's so easy to get at the how compared to the why.
