The Motivation for Authoritarianism
The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality. We'll see in 1984 we get this whole speech on the motivation for authoritarianism which in this case in 1984 is pure, simply pure power. Justifying one's actions as the end justifies the means is so passe at that point. You don't need to do that anymore. I was taking this as kind of his version of Marx's picture of history that at least according to this whether it is what all societies must do or something this is at least not just what this totalitarian society did.
