During the 1850s, Bombay suffered from a crisis of water supply. Generous citizens would arrange for spring wells at certain intervals in the fort area. The ramparts of the fort had long become useless for military purposes. But impressive wading mundabs would be erected on top of them by wealthy Hindus and Parsis.
