How Do Habits Work?

All habits are made up of four phases, cue, craving, response and reward. Cue is a signal to the brain that there is a reward around which instantly leads to a craving. Cravings can be hard to ignore because they quickly become all your ious brain can focus on. Until you respond to that craving and do something about it, most often giving the brain the thing it wants so it can earn its reward, it will keep nagging at you. When you give in to the craving and the brain gets the reward, you have a double wammy, because you just reinforced the original cue to make it even more powerful the next time.
