The Importance of Deference
The author says it's easy to blame specific groups for inequalities. But he argues that young people who mobilize distinctiveness, deference and defiance are no different from us. In London and New York City, there is this national policy narrative against black boys underachievement, she writes. Black girls were not praised for what I call compulsory deference because they're supposed to be deferential.
