Dots and vows didn't exist in 652. Uthman assumed that what they know, I'd like the dialectical differences in a written text, existed in the seventh century. You look at a bare word without dotting or markings and it's an open game. In the ninth century, there would have been dots and vowels. He is speaking about his own time. And this is a common error all the way through the traditions.
