Primary Hyperparathyroidism - What's the Most Common Cause?
The most common cause of hypercalcemia in the outpatient setting is primary hyperparathyroidism. 90% of cases are going to be from an adenoma, a distant second would be hyperplasia. The overall blood effect of elevated parathyroid hormone is increased calcium and decreased phos. And prolonged hyperparathiroidism can lead to renal failure. But so you'll see you'll do a urine study see increased 24-hour calcium. You'll obviously see an elevated serum PTH.
