At what point does it become genuinely global rather than a series of local separate operations? I think amazingly early. It's way before the 19th century. This is an amazingly globally integrated industry and in some ways it's no less globally integrated than if you look at the manufacturing of computers today. So obviously some of the details are quite different but generally this is a very global system. And therefore it can only be understood from a global perspective.
