The film was a solid box office hit, grossing about 19 million dollars and becoming the ninth highest grossing film of the year for dianah ross. The whole time i watched ladies sings the blues, all i could wonder was, what exactly was this film trying to accomplish? It's always difficult to separate art and commerce when you're talking about movies. I walk away from this film feeling no closer to understanding holiday's actions. If anything, the darkness and despair that radiates from the life of its subject only makes it more confusing. All you can do is take note of the history and listen to her sing into the night.
