In athletes and active individuals, what appears to be uniquely risky is an increase in body mass and body fat that outpaces increases in fitness. The effects of muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness were independent of each other and largely of BMI and age. So theoretically, if you had a lineman who increased their aerobic fitness, you could reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.
