The Effects of Muscle Mass on Mortality

The literature supports the idea that what's really bad is low levels of muscle mass. The cut offs kind of differ from study to study, but I usually think about it in terms of FMI or the fat free mass index. For women, the risk really starts to increase for things like all cause mortality at FMI below 14. And for men, it's about 17. Of course, there's like a buffer there, you don't want to be right on the cut-off.
