The inspiration is like the systolic effect of brooding. It's a little bit like the heart which has an increase in systole when you increase your adrenaline, which is also associated with an increase in function of diastole. So our neurons have to get faster and more frequent so that our muscles can contract more quickly and more powerfully. And we have inspiratory muscles that drag the air in and then we activate expiratory muscles to push the air out. Many of our expiratories are really unactivated when we are stressed and we're really trying to ramp up our minute ventilation.
