The History of Mars - Certis Major
Discovery of certis major made more than one big contribution to science. It allowed hoygens to work out the length of the martian day. He could track the dark patch as it moved across the surface of mars, as it rotated. And he determined that the martianday is 24 and one half hours long - a very accurate measurement to day.
