Hawthorne's career was probably as tranquil and uneventful as ever fell to the lot of a man of letters. He got fired from a job and then wrote this book. His first story novel, Fanshawe was published in 1828. Why isn't that magazine still around? Oh, no, it sounds so useful in entertaining.
