Lane Green is the Economist's language columnist and author of Writing with Style. He says good writing means reaching for the clearest, most plain and ordinary words. The new style guide took nine months to write after 12 editions in its previous form. Lane: English has lots of layers of vocabulary but they have subtle differences.
