Peter Scheldahl is the renowned art critic for the New Yorker. He saw almost every exhibition there was to see in New York during the 1960s and 70s. An art bar is a kind of divey bar where you just show up and know that folks would be there. In my day, it was the Shark Bar on Prince Street.
