Do You Want to Separate Assets?

In your case, I don't think that you are necessarily looking to separate assets legally. Once you have co-mingled assets in a marriage, they do belong to both of you. A lawyer would look at them as marital assets and approach them not as if they were your separate property. Not every state allows them, but the vast majority do.
