The Damapada - It's Only Me Who Can Help Me
The Damapada is about radically taking responsibility, not putting our misfortune out onto anybody else. So I think what that says is that the spiritual life starts with taking responsibility for ourselves. Nietzsche used to talk about resentment as being sort of completely interwoven into Western thinking. He described resentment as the morality of the weak and Buddhism does not believe weakness to be a virtue either.
